Potential Bus Drivers must meet the following entrance qualifications (not an exhaustive list):

- Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency

- Light BusDriver: Six months of experience in driving a bus or truck or successful completion of the School Bus Certificate Training Program given by the LAUSD Transportation Services Division

- Heavy Bus Driver: One year of experience in driving a bus or truck of at least 16,000 lbs gross vehicle weight. Successful completion of an accredited course in heavy bus driving training can be substituted for the one year of experience.

Transporation Services Division offers a free School Bus Certification Training Program. This program will waive the minimum qualifications required for Light and Heavy Bus Drivers.

Step One: Orientation
To get started, attend an orientation to learn more of the position requirements.

Step Two: Application Link
Pre-qualified applicants may apply for the Bus Driver Trainee position and go the through the employment screening process.

Step Three: Start Training
Qualified applicants for the Bus Driver Trainee position start training. The training consists of two parts, classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training. On average, training will take up to 10-12 weeks.

Step Four: Complete all the testing requirements
Complete all the testing requirements with DMV & CHP. Upon obtaining your certification and license, you are placed on an eligibility list for Heavy or Light Bus Driver.

Step Five: Eligibility List
An offer for Light or Heavy Bus Driver is offered to you. After you accept a position, you will be considered for employment. You are now on the road to your new career!

School Bus Certification Training Program - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
    • What are the eligibility requirements for the Bus Driver Trainee position?
      • Applicant must be at least 18 years old
      • Valid California driver's license
      • Safe driving history and provide DMV K-4 record printout
      • Attend an orientation
      • Pass a background check
      • Pass a DOT pre-employment drug and alcohol test
      • Have a high school diploma, GED, or pass the districts proficiency test
    • How do I apply for the program?
      • After you attend the orientation, a link to apply for the Bus Driver Trainee is sent to you.
    • Where is the Orientation held?
      • Typically, at 115 N. Beaudry Ave., Los Angeles 90012
    • What do I need to bring to the Orientation?
      • Attendees must bring a valid California driver's license.
      • A complete DMV K-4 driving record printout that is dated within 10 days of the orientation.
      • Additional information will be emailed to you.
    • Is there a cost for the Bus Driver Trainee Training Program?
      • There is no entry fee, however, there are expenses (up to $200) that participants will need to cover.
    • What is covered during the Orientation?
      • Attendees learn more details about the program and will have an opportunity to ask questions.
    • What happens after being selected for the program?
      • In the weeks following the orientation, the selected individuals will take a physical exam and participate in a California Highway Patrol (CHP) background check.
      • Pre-employment screening takes place.

    When and where will the training take place?

      • There are two parts to the training, the in-class training and the behind-the-wheel training. The in-class training will take place at Transportation Services Division's Training Room and class will be about eight (8) hours each day. The behind-the-wheel training will be at various L.A. Unified bus lots. We will try to assign you close to your home. The behind-the-wheel training will be approximately six (6) hours each day and you will be training with an instructor and up to three (3) other students.

Potential Automotive Mechanics (Bus-Truck) must meet the follwoing qualifications (not an exhaustive list):

-Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency

-Completion of a four year apprentice training program in heavy duty automotive equipment repair, or four years of equivalent experience which must have included two years of mechanical work on heavy-duty buses or trucks.
