Crispy Air Fried French Fries without all the Greasy Oil

These homemade air fried french fries are so easy to make and wow, they hardly need any oil at all! They aren’t exactly like oil fried potatoes because they’re not drenched in oil. Instead, these air fryer french fries are still crispy and wonderful without all the fat from oil. One pound of potatoes only uses two teaspoons of oil when cooked in the air fryer, that’s it! French fries cooked in the air fryer tastes like a crispy roasted french fry, slightly dry but totally less greasy. The texture is still fantastic and definitely satisfies the craving for fries that’s healthier and lower calorie. Not to mention that they cook quicker than if you tried making them in the oven.

Healthy French Fries in the Air Fryer

As long as you don’t eat the whole basket and stick to a reasonable serving size, these french fries totally are healthier than oil-fried potatoes. Just think of the comparison here: two teaspoons of oil for a pound of fries vs at least 1 cup of oil need for frying. That’s a huge difference in oil and calories. And if you want even less calories than the 2 teaspoons, try using an organic olive oil cooking spray.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound (454 g) fresh potatoes , cut into 1/4” french fry size
  • 2 teaspoons (10 ml) olive oil
  • kosher salt , to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon (1.25 ml) garlic powder , optional
  • ground black pepper , to taste

Instructions

  • Wash and cut potatoes into french fry sizes. Try to keep them as evenly sized as possible for even cooking.

  • Add potatoes to bowl. Drizzle olive oil evenly over the potatoes. Sprinkle salt and pepper (and/or garlic powder) evenly over potatoes.

Gently toss the potatoes to evenly coat with oil and seasonings.

  • Place the potatoes in air fryer basket and spread them evenly over the basket.

Air fry potatoes at 380°F for about 18-22 minutes. About halfway through cooking, shake the basket and gently turn the potatoes. Try not to break them. For crisper potatoes, shake them a second time and cook for an additional 2-4 minutes.

Notes

Recipes were cooked in 3-4 qt air fryers. If using a larger air fryer, the recipe might cook quicker so adjust cooking time.

If cooking in multiple batches, the first batch will take longer to cook if Air Fryer is not already pre-heated.

Remember to set a timer to shake/flip/toss the food as directed in recipe.

What are the Best Air Fryers?

Here’s our extensive write up on Air Fryer World’s Best Air Fryer Guide. There’s so many on the market now. You just need to research and find the ones that fits your needs, capacity and style. We group the basket style air fryers into 2 main size groups: 3-4 qt. range & the 5-6 qt. range. There’s oven style and basket style. With so many to choose from, we highlight the ones that are most popular for small to medium sized families. Here’s our favorites:

Good Mid-Sized Air Fryers

“That’s a stylish Air Fryer” was said as we unboxed the Cosori. Beyond being stylish, it has cooked great. The basket is not as tall and wider than most in its size group, which is perfect. You’ll have a lot better results in an air fryer with single layered, spread out foods, then with ones piled high and thick.
The non-stick basket style(non-wire base)& smoothness of the basket tray is also great for clean up.

Has a great ceramic coated basket, one of the longest lasting we’ve used. Super powerful fan that will often cook recipes even faster than other air fryers. We initially returned our first one because we thought we wouldn’t like the basket style. After reconsidering, we bought another and are super glad we did. We love it’s basket and just a platform insert. One less bulky thing to wash. This is a great air fryer.

Simple functional panel. Solid basket design that is less likely to come unscrewed or break like other designs frequently do after a few months of repeated use. Great price for the size. They have several color options for the design-minded user.

Good Larger Air Fryers

This is quickly becoming one of our favorite larger basket style air fryers. Great basket size, good controls, cooks nice. Clean up is great. It has become one of our kitchen favorites.

Most of us are familiar with the Instant Pot Brand of pressure cookers. They now makeair fryersand it has become a regular in our kitchen. TheVortex plus 9-in-1is beyond the conventional air fryer. What if your using a instant pot combe air fryer

    • Best Recipe Box Reply

Hi Elizabeth, you would only need to use the air fryer function. There’s some appliances out there that are hybrids of pressure cooker and air fryer. These fries don’t need to be cooked in the pressure cooker function. Just cooking them in the air fryer will work and keeps them “crispy”.

They came out absolutely amazing. Was worried they wouldn’t come out as crispy since we wouldn’t be using nearly as much oil but they came out crisp like crispy roasted texture. I’m so happy to not have to use too much oil all!
